Declutter Your Day for More Meaningful Tasks

Educators are often stretched thin, juggle extensive curricula, endure meetings and have additional responsibilities beyond their contracts, writes Darlshawn (Shawn) Patterson, an educator and Ph.D. student in the College of Education literacy-studies program at the University of South Florida, in The 74.

“Doing less,” or “subtraction,” is a tool often neglected. We focus on adding to to-do lists instead of considering what to stop doing.

“Subtraction can lead to deeper learning by eliminating unnecessary elements to achieve better outcomes.

“Three areas where subtraction can benefit educators and students:

Subtract Unnecessary Meetings

“Reducing meetings can give you valuable time to plan and grade and tend to paperwork and administrative tasks. Reclaim hours by cutting back on obligatory gatherings and focus on more purposeful communication.

Subtract Instructional Content

“In high-stakes-testing systems, covering extensive material outlined in pacing guides can lead to tough instructional decisions, shallow teaching and more pressure for teachers and students. Narrow or subtract instructional content and emphasize depth over breadth to dive into topics more thoroughly and to ensure students learn foundational concepts before moving on.

Subtract Reading-Intervention Classes

“Many states mandate certain reading instruction, which may include intervention groups or classes for students with reading deficiencies.

“In secondary grades, students often attend intensive reading classes if they score level one or two on the state standardized assessment. These classes sometimes become bureaucratic obligations more than effective interventions. Large class sizes and high teacher turnover rates can diminish their impact. Research shows little is gained when lower readers are grouped by ability. Instead, invest in more targeted support. Strategically reduce reliance on large, impersonal intervention classes.

“Educators’ ultimate goal is creating meaningful learning experiences that resonate with students. Go ahead and declutter—remove the unnecessary to make room for the essential.”
