District Uses Top-Performing Teachers to Coach Peers

Opportunity Culture is a new staffing model being implemented in the Fort Worth Independent School District that designates top-performing teachers as multi-classroom leaders, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.  The aim is to raise overall instructional quality and improve academic performance by supporting not only struggling teachers but also those who are average.

The district’s academic performance has come under scrutiny, with Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker pointing to stagnant test scores.

Master teachers will coach their peers while continuing to teach their own classes.

“If the test run is successful, district leaders plan to expand the program to six more campuses next year,” says Woodrow Bailey, the district’s chief of talent management.

The model has shown potential in other districts, with studies indicating improved student achievement, particularly in math.
