AI Will Revolutionize Teaching Without Replacing Teachers

Anant Agarwal, founder of edX and MIT professor, argues that artificial intelligence won’t replace teachers but rather enhance their capabilities, according to an Education Slice summary of a New York Times report.

AI frees teachers from repetitive tasks such as grading and administrative duties to spend more time engaging and inspiring students, he says.

Tools such as AI-powered tutors, adaptive learning systems and platforms such as Khan Academy’s Khanmigo and edX are reshaping classrooms by personalizing learning, offering instant feedback and identifying student needs in real time.

Short term, AI helps create lesson plans, customize quizzes and detect learning gaps. Long term, AI has the potential to deliver dynamic, personalized classrooms with teachers guiding discussions, providing emotional support and fostering creativity. This is possible because AI will automate routine tasks

AI cannot replace the empathy and passion educators bring but can amplify these qualities, Agarwal says. There is the potential to transform teachers into “superteachers.” Educators should look at AI as a co-pilot to expand their impact, match education to individual needs and promote lifelong learning, he says.
