ONLINE COURSE OVERVIEW

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among students in our schools today – and the numbers are increasing, unfortunately. This course will help teachers, administrators and other school personnel feel better equipped to identify and intervene with a student who may need help. It provides useful information so educators will be prepared to handle the difficult, but critical, conversation with a troubled student.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the scope of youth suicide and why awareness matters
  • Recognizing individual, family, and community risk factors
  • Identifying warning signs of distress and signs of imminent risk
  • Ways to engage students in calm, supportive conversations
  • How to ask directly about suicide using clear, appropriate language
  • Importance of responding appropriately when risk escalates
