Webinar: You Gotta Reach ‘Em to Teach ‘Em

Getting students engaged – and keeping them engaged – is a significant challenge in today’s classrooms. For students who learn differently, engagement looks a bit different.  So how do we do it? How do we get students to the edge of their seats for successful learning?

In this timely 90-minute webinar, Author, Professor and Educational Neuroscience Expert Dr. John Almarode will disclose the key “must-have” ingredients for maximum engagement in your classroom environment.

Since the late 70’s researchers and educators alike have debated the linkage between brain stimulation/learning and best practices in bridging the gap between neuroscience and education.  Many concepts such as “brain gyms” and more have evolved, however the core concept remains that our brains are hard-wired to learn by doing.

This interactive webinar will help educators understand and experience the necessary steps to activate the brain so that it’s “rocking and rolling” in the classroom.  Keeping the brain engaged requires an invigorating experience that keeps students coming back for more…every day!  This webinar will help educators at all levels utilize the most recent research to keep student brains engaged – resulting in academic success.

Webinar Highlights Include:

  • The latest educational neuroscience findings
  • The design and measurement of classroom environments that promote student engagement
  • STEM inclusion
  • Interventions for low socioeconomic populations

Success Criteria:

  • By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the brain-based components of student engagement.
  • Identify and implement instructional practices in different content areas that promote engagement.
  • Support instructional decisions with research from the science of learning.
  • Summarize the role of formative assessment and feedback in teaching and learning.
  • Integrate the essential components of an effective and engaging learning experience into daily classroom practices.

As a teacher, he has worked with all age groups in education, from pre kindergarteners to graduate students. As a staff developer, Dr. Almarode has presented locally, nationally, and internationally in countries as far away as Saudi Arabia, Scotland, South Korea, and Thailand. He has worked with thousands of teachers, dozens of school districts, and multiple professional organizations. Dr. Almarode has provided keynote addresses and workshops on a variety of topics including student engagement, evidence-based practices, creating enriched environments that promote learning, and designing classrooms with the brain in mind. His action-packed workshops offer participants ready-to-use strategies and the brain rules that make them work. He has also written multiple articles, reports and book chapters, as well as a children’s book entitled Dylan Discovers His Brain.

At James Madison University, He works with pre-service teachers, and actively pursues his research interests including educational neuroscience, the design and measurement of classroom environments that promote student engagement, interest and engagement in STEM disciplines, specialized STEM high schools, interventions for low socioeconomic populations, college and university laboratory schools, and the translation of American education pedagogy in international schools. The work of John and his colleagues has been presented to the Virginia Senate, the U.S. Department of Education, the United State Congress, as well as the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
