500,000 American children with some form of autism will become adults over the next decade. Students with autism spectrum disorders continue to demonstrate amazing capabilities, talents and academic strengths. However, many parents fear their children’s post-educational future will consist of sitting on the couch watching television.
Increasingly, students on the autism spectrum are participating in general education classrooms and attending colleges and universities. To ensure these students reach their full potential, it is essential that educators learn how to address their difficulties with socialization and with emotional regulation. A variety of evidence-based teaching approaches and promising practices are available to provide students with ASD opportunities to learn the social skills and emotional-regulation strategies they need to be able to thrive in home, school and community settings.
This engaging 90-minute webinar will provide participants with a better understanding of the social and emotional functioning characteristics of students with ASD and procedures for using a variety of support strategies for children and teens with ASD as they learn essential social and emotional-regulation skills. User-friendly, step-by-step procedures will be demonstrated to allow attendees to immediately implement interventions that will make a significant impact on the lives of those they support.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Debra Leach is an Assistant Professor of Special Education at Winthrop University and is a board-certified behavior analyst who specializes in working with children with autism spectrum disorders, their families and those who serve them. She has served as a special education teacher and general education teacher at the elementary level working in inclusive settings and was the inclusion specialist at the K-8 laboratory school at Florida Atlantic University.
Debra has served as the Associate Director for the Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. In her current position at Winthrop University, Debra teachers a variety of courses in special education. She also has received grants to provide statewide training to teachers promoting the successful inclusion of students with autism spectrum disorders.
In addition to publishing several journal articles, Debra is the author of two books, Bringing ABA into Your Inclusive Classroom: A Guide to Improving Outcomes for Students with ASD and Bringing ABA into Home, School, and Play for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
