Description

Technology Safety for Tykes, Tweens and Teachers

Cyberbullying. Oversharing. Predation. Exploitation. All are dangers kids in grades K – 6 face these days. By age 10, half of North American students own cell phones. And by age 12, more than 50 percent have one or more social media accounts.

In one case, 12-year-olds were accused of cyberstalking a classmate who committed suicide. In another case, an 8-year-old girl received pornographic pictures and videos from a stranger on a popular social messaging site. “Stranger danger” seems so quaint in this online age. It’s no longer easy to identify the dangerous stranger for tykes and tweens – as educators well know.

Teachers, administrators, counselors and school staff play key roles in training students on how to benefit from and protect themselves from the internet. During this 90-minute webinar, Richard Guerry, Founder and Executive Director of IROC2 (the Institute for Responsible Online and Cellphone Communication), will explore the enormous upside of online tools for elementary students while providing tools and strategies for helping them avoid the many dangers and pitfalls.
