For elementary teachers, student discipline situations can be all-consuming – and they pose huge obstacles to academic success. PBIS and similar programs offer an excellent framework for creating a supportive environment, but don’t offer a lot of help to teachers facing a rapidly escalating situation. Student discipline situations have a way of intensifying quickly, and before an educator realizes what is happening, an annoying situation can escalate into a full-blown crisis. The Responsibility-Centered Discipline model provides teachers supportive tools for preventing challenging moments from escalating, without relying on office referrals and suspensions. In this 90-minute webinar, Responsibility-Centered Discipline co-creator and elementary teacher Angela Thompson gives an introduction to RCD principles and provides tools to help educators become masters of challenging student discipline moments with younger children.
Angela Thompson will discuss two key components of the Responsibility-Centered Discipline model – including “Give ‘em Five” guided conversations and the Response-Ability Process for de-escalating problem behavior. Traditional disciplinary systems, incentive programs and time-based consequences do little to help students become more responsible for decisions they make or to encourage them to take ownership of their own academic success. Ms. Thompson will provide school-proven methods for modifying long-term behavior with younger students and building a responsible school culture.

About the Presenter:
Angela Thompson, M.Ed., is the co-creator of the Responsibility-Centered Discipline program, as well as a Certified Master Trainer. She is also co-author of Give ‘em Five: A Five-Step Approach to Handling Challenging Moments with Students (K-6 and 6-12). She has nearly 20 years of experience in elementary education as a classroom teacher. Although she enjoys the opportunity to travel throughout the United States to train fellow educators, she misses the excitement of being in the classroom. Angela brings her knowledge and passion for working with young children to RCD. She has experienced firsthand how Give ‘em Five conversations and the Response-Ability Process can transform classrooms and help even the toughest young students.
